oh the hues of summer!

I literally spent the entire day on my computer today, floating between work and surfing the net.
Whilst clicking through endless celebrity pictures on eonline, I cam across a Gossip Girl season 4 picture with Blair and Serena. And I know it's season 4 because I haven't seen these outfits before. Good lawd, I love Blair's wardrobe

finding stuff

This past weekend I went home to Pretoria, kidnapped my brother and made him come with me to Bell Bottoms in Pierneef or something like that... He was mortified when we arrived at our destination because of all the 'old stuff.' Has anyone noticed that I like using the word 'mortified'? Anyways, so Bell Bottoms is this cute antique and second hand shop in an area of Pretoria I don't normally go to, but that I go to because it is the treasure trove where I found my old spectacles and gloves and my beautiful coffee table...
outside
I want that bench for my non-existent place...

mannequins
This place has everything: from mannequins to old picture frames to all those sweets you used to eat when you were younger and that sherbet stuff in a straw....
glass bottles
The stair case is so frightfully steep and because it's lined with all these glass jars, you literally walk down them holding your breath
thithi
I found this beautiful and flirty shrug thing, which I can't wait to wear... I actually have no idea what this is called. Does a shrug require sleeves for it to be a shrug? It could be a stole, but I was under the impression, that for a stole to be a stole it had to be fur or faux fur... Help me somebody!
mirror
Bell Bottoms has corners filled with interesting things to look at like this wall behind the mirror covered in old images and posters
patterns
If I knew how to sew I would have walked away with all the patterns they had on sale
bather
This bather was my absolute favourite thing in the shop. I kept looking at it and touching it and loving it and the only reason I didn't buy it is because of the awkward blue petal pointing to the va-jay jay area
rail of clothes
Rails and rails of clothing... My brother managed to buy a full suit for R200. You're thinking it must have been a shoddy suit if it cost R200, right? Nope! This suit he found is immaculately cut and fits him like a glove. I'm going to convince him to pose one day and you'll see...Who the hell says 'shoddy' these days? Maybe all these old things I like are making talk old
tins
I like old tins and just old things in general...

beautiful inspiration...

The other day I was looking through my 'things that I like' folder and found this shoot by Camilla Ã…krans featuring Tiiu Kuik as the lady in the tutti fruiti hat, for The New York Times Style Magazine. When I saved these images in my folder I remember seeing the images and falling in love with the old washed out yet similarly vibrant quality of the images. The fantastic styling (everyone knows I love gentle opulence and beautiful accessories) moved the images to the 'do not delete ever!' folder...

magazines: this really upsets me

Okay, so a couple of months ago when Elle released their April issue with Alek Wek on the cover, I shared my feelings about how Italia Vogue's ‘Black Issue’ upset me... Now I am even more upset because of this...
black vogue 1
Granted, I am a few months behind on this news, but when I saw this, I was mortified. I am not a racially charged person and believe me this blog is not a place for me to air my views on such matters as race, politics or ideology, but this, people is just plain colonial thinking.

Why do black celebrities, black stories, black fashion and black style have to be profiled separately by the western world? I know that there are black focused publications like Ebony, Essence and locally True Love and such, but those came about simply because black women and black people in general were not being reflected in the main stream publications at the time. And we all know for one to consume and participate in the consumption of any element of popular culture, one needs to see an aspirational version reflected in that media, be it a commercial, a magazine editorial etc.

I guess what is upsetting me is that by doing this, Italia Vogue is actually saying that they consider black people and curvy women (there is a Vogue Curvy too) 'the other,' not normal, different and in opposition to them - the standard. And that this difference needs to be studied and documented like something alien to them that they do not understand. This is what this Vogue Black and Vogue Curvy says to me. They are basically saying to Tyra Banks and Zoe Kravitz and the other black people profiled: "we think you're pretty cool... for a black person."

weekend

This past weekend was full. I think I was trying to distract myself from the fact that I had just resigned from a job with no fulltime job on the horizons. I mean don't get me wrong, it's not like I don't have a plan of some sorts, I do have some projects I'm working on, because being broke doesn't suit me. With that being said, I am still a bit nervous and would like to go on holiday.

Anyways, so Friday was my last day and I was feeling celebratory to say the least. First stop was the Alex Theatre for the Tumi Live: Remixed gig. I am not going to review that gig, because I was barely there... I was in champagne world, so I didn't hear any music and I can't remember any real conversations. What I do remember is this girl below's great hair and outfit and how she tried to run away from me when I photographed her...

Then on Saturday morning, I was slightly fragile from my hangover and only made it to the Pultrichude sale at around 13:00. Last time I was there,I was consumed by hunger and completely ignored the Food Market and rushed off to Parkhurst to grab lunch. This time I actually looked at the Food Market and actually bought something... but it wasn't food.

My gorgeous friend Vie (pictured above-above) with the grey hair was selling some vintage / second hand goodies at Pultrichude. (Note to self... ask Milli, if I can join in on the fun next time). Anyways, so Vie does this really horrible thing, where she goes out and finds stuff that she knows I'll like and then I end up liking it and spending money even when I didn't intend to, but atleast she gives me 'friendship discount.' I'm on to you Vie. Read her blog http://viemyselfandi.blogspot.com/.... and the blog I share with Vie and my other friend Nomi www.pinklyte.blogspot.com *shameless plug*

This is one of the things that Vie had on sale that I just could not resist. This jacket is my new favourite thing ever! I am going to have to stop myself from wearing it everyday because it's versatility is overwhelming. I got to the sale and was wearing a floral dress and loved this jacket so much I threw it over my floral dress and the floral on floral was amazing... There's a picture on Milli's blog http://missmillib.blogspot.com/...

I love these accessories from Hello Fox and was glad to see them at Pultrichude. These are made by Angie from Lucky Pony http://superduper.co.za/lucky/and her friend Jo. I had the pleasure of meeting Angie (in real life) a couple of weeks ago in her kitchen whilst she was making those delicious goodies she makes for Wolves... She's like super-woman people!

I loved this Christopher Strong skirt... if I had a job, I would have bought it, but I am trying to be a grown up... I kept coming back to it and looking at it and trying to find things I hated about it, but I loved it and walked away, like a grown up. Cos apparently, when you're a grown up, you can't have everything you want... Sigh...

Spotted: after months of not seeing her: Fix! I loved what she was wearing on Saturday afternoon. Everything about the outfit felt 'markety.' Like she could have been spotted casually walking through Portobello...
