j&b met - a stress inducing event for thithi
I'm freaking out about what to wear to the Met and getting a whole bunch of pictures from last year's Met made me stress even more. I don't want to be too over-dressed and too under-dressed. Actually I just want to be comfy.
This is one of the pictures that came with the press release sent to me and I have to say that I quite like what this young lady is wearing. She looks comfy. Casual glamour - that's what I want to achieve. Although I can't imagine how that will be possible with the theme being "Larger than life" and a press release that reads "massive outfits, oversized accessories and gigantic personalities are “Larger than life.” Sigh... I'll have to do larger my way then.

good hair
I have always been one of those girls who relaxed their hair. In fact I can’t even tell you what age I started relaxing my hair. The truth is; I was never really given a choice because my mother made the choice for me. I suppose, for a busy, professional working mother - dealing with three girls who refused to comb their hair in the morning - the decision to straighten our tangled, natural locks into something more ‘manageable’ made sense.
The other truth is, I willingly continued with the chemical straightening of my hair into adult hood: because as far as I knew, had heard, was told - natural hair is high maintenance. Relaxed straightened hair, a weave, braids etc have all been sold as better options in ‘manageable’ hair than a natural kinky fro.
Recently, my youngest sister decided to chop it all off and go natural. When asked how I felt about it I am pretty sure I replied diplomatically, giving arguments for why it was a good idea and counter arguments for why it might not be such a good idea. We discussed the possibility that the shape of her head might be too square and spoke about how short hair, shaved or even just cropped, sometimes present some women with the challenge of making sure they look feminine and girly with the short hair. I can’t believe I am referencing a white girl in this post about black hair, but I recall reading an article or quote where Alexa Chung spoke about how when she cut her hair, she always felt like she had to wear really feminine dresses to counter act the short crop she was sporting.
So this brings me to my current dilemma – perhaps the use of the word dilemma is slightly hyperbolic, but the point remains, I am at a cross roads of sorts regarding my hair. Inspired by this picture of Kathleen Neal Cleaver, a former Black Panther Party member, I was inspired to chop my hair and go natural. I found this picture of her on Le Coil and loved it because there is something very powerful in her hairstyle. There is a sense of knowing that I can’t really describe.
Anyways, besides all of that hullabaloo, it’s taken me a whole year to get my hair where it is now. And whilst I love ‘pushing the bush’ as my friend Livvy calls it, I miss the versatility of having braids or straightened relaxed hair. To be quite honest, I’m not sure what the point is of this blog post… I was having an internal debate with myself regarding the step forward with my hair and ended up jotting some thoughts down.
Next post… fun lovely fashion promise xx

black swan
Last night I watched Black Swan. I am haunted. Natalie Portman has been one of my favourite actresses for as long as I can remember. Closer is truly one of my favourite movies. I have seen it over 20 times and know the entire dialogue and every bit of wisdom I have received from that movie comes from Natalie Portman's character Alice / Jane's mouth.
I totally went about watching this movie the wrong way, but I had to see it because I'm sort of dark in that way and needed to watch a beautifully chilling movie. Plus Rodarte is one of my absolute favourite designers. I am still going to see it again when it comes out on the big screen here in South Africa, because I reckon the experience will be completely different.

woolworths x smashbox x burlesque
I love musicals, which is why I was really excited, when I received an invitation from Woolworths and Smashbox to see the gorgeously sexy musical Burlesque starring Cher and Christina Aguilera.
A fun movie with great make up and gorgeous costumes, Burlesque is a totally modern take on Burlesque, so don’t expect to see something or anything in the line of Dita von Teese. In fact at times I felt as if I was watching something based on the actual Pussy Cat Dolls (not the band) and Jenny Andrew’s described it perfectly in her tweet after watching the movie by likening the movie to Coyote Ugly, but with better costumes. And how much fun was Coyote Ugly? Didn’t we all sing that song by Leann Rhimes and want to dance on bar counters?

what the hell am i gonna wear?
I got this at my door today... I am so excited to be going to The J&B Met because I've never been. I am now in serious panic mode because I have no idea what I am going to wear. This is going to be the roughest two weeks in my life. There will be tears and empty stomachs, blocks of cheese and carrot sticks so as not to faint from hunger.
My brother took this picture... How hilarious. FYI to anyone who sees me on the street - I'm pushin' the bush as my friend Livvy would say. I'm rocking a natural poof these days!

sneaker fetish
Anyone wanna buy these for me?
After I discovered those amazing Nike Air Max 1’s in canary yellow with their amazing royal blue soles, I became a woman on a mission. I harassed the Gallery on 4th boys via all social networking portals and after a day or two I got the bad news… my dream sneakers weren't part of the drop that made it to South Africa. My heartache was literally like 15 seconds long, because I already had hearts in my eyes for these lovely Air Revolution Air Max 1’s, in a colourway that I can only describe as delicious. I have a penchant for anything that is or feels vintage, retro or old school. I love the 70s and I could totally be wrong, but something about these sneakers makes me feel like I could have walked onto the set of That 70s Show and totally been in costume.
