how do i get dressed...

Last year around June I was featured in the Elle Magazine for a wardrobe feature, alongside fashion designer Abigail Betz, blogger and boutique owner Milisuthando Bongela and some other cool and stylish Joburgers. I was cleaning up my desktop, as you do at 3:25AM, and came across the original email interview.

How do you get dressed? Do you plan your outfit before you even open the closet doors?
I generally have no recollection of half the clothes I own because I’m a ‘keeper’ – not a hoarder – but a ‘keeper’. Sometimes I even forget that I own something until I see it in a photograph or something. I have some beautiful things that I absolutely love and have to stop myself from wearing too much. I never plan outfit, which is why I can’t go to the gym in the morning and have to get dressed there., because I know that I might go to sleep feeling one way and wake up wanting to be someone else.

Or do you look at what's there and take inspiration from that?
I tend to put the things I love on top of the neat pile of clothes or hanging in the most visible place in my wardrobe, therefore they tend to become the pieces that make the rounds and by default inspire the rest of the outfit.

Do you pull everything out? Do you go through several wardrobe changes?
I only entertain wardrobe changes before a night out where a boy must be impressed. I generally don’t know how to dress to impress boys. My style is vintage and quirky at times. I prefer demure hemlines and coquettish Blair Waldorf type looks, which is not sexy to the general male population, so that is the only time I have had to go beyond and outside of me to style up something different. I also tend to do only one wardrobe change when I’m feeling fat (or am actually fat) and the envisioned outfit makes my derriere look like a bus. Other than the two reasons listed - I wouldn’t mess up my wardrobe for any old day and I like what I own.

Do you have any recollections about a mom or aunt or big sister's closet that may have influenced your own?
I loved my mother’s wardrobe and I still love it today, because she never threw away anything. I look at her pictures when she and my dad were dating and her style was impeccable. Even her 80’s power- dressing phase has yielded some gems, which are now part of my wardrobe. There are a plethora of photographs from when my sister’s and I used to play dress up in my mother’s clothes when we were younger, which is when I think we fell in love with her clothes and which is why we fight now over who gets what.

Is there a theme to your closet?
Vintage and second hand is the strongest theme in my closet. I hardly ever buy anything that is new anymore or have to because of my mother’s wardrobe.

Are there categories in your wardrobe? How do you organise your wardrobe?
My wardrobe is organised according to categories – dresses, jackets and so forth. The really special items or rather clothing that I consider to be ‘going out’ clothing, is displayed on hangers, whilst the rest get folded nicely on shelves and are organised according to colour or season.

Is it pristine or messy and colourful?
I wouldn’t say it is pristine, but it certainly is not messy. My wardrobe is a work in progress. I am constantly trying to figure out new ways to make the organisation in my wardrobe better and more efficient. To be quite honest, I need a walk in closet.

What are you wardrobe staples?
I don’t really have wardrobe staples. I don’t even own the essential ‘crisp white shirt.’ If I were to talk about items I feel like I definitely need, I would speak of white and black vests and pretty cardigans, because at the best of times, I can be a layering kind of girl.

How would you describe your style?
Vintage inspired, quirky and street. I like to turn even the most feminine floral dresses into something edgy and street.

How is this reflected both in the contents of the wardrobe and the way things are arranged?
The items in my wardrobe that I love and adore, and are displayed on hangers, are the items I bought for less than R100 at second hand stores or that I sneaked out of my parent’s home from my mother’s rails of clothing.

Do you have regular clearouts?
Not regular enough. I am very good at giving away things that I have fallen out of love with or that just don’t suit me.

Are there things you know you'll never wear again but hold onto for sentimental or other reasons?
A pair of beautiful cream python pointed high heels, that Michelle Pfeiffer’s character in Scarface; Elvira would have worn. They are so old and damaged and I keep them because they are still one of the most beautiful shoes I have put my feet in. (I am sad to announce that I recently got rid of these... Well, they are in a pile that's meant to go to Hospice or the trash...so I think I'm going to save them and keep them)

Any wardrobe mistakes?
Of course! The most recent fashion mistake I remember was buying a strapless harem pant jumpsuit. It just plain and simple didn’t suit me, but I bought into the hype and I paid dearly for it with my debit card.

What dominates? Shoes? Handbags? Hats?
Handbags and belts definitely dominate because I believe in accessories the way Obama believes in healthcare. When I turned 21 almost everyone gave me a handbag (and I didn’t have a registry) and belts with statement buckles are the answer to every fashion question I have.

What is your shopping strategy? Impulse buys or planned with precision?

I have an impulsive, yet planned shopping strategy. When my wardrobe needs inspiration in a certain category, for example, the bottoms department of my wardrobe, I will go out looking for just bottoms. This search will include slacks, skirts etc and I won’t know exactly what I’m looking for, but if it falls under the category of bottoms, then I will buy it.

Which are current favourite items?
At the moment, I am having a love affair with my witchy boots from a second hand clothing sale. The day I bought them, I wasn’t really trying to go shopping and I came across these boots that hadn’t fitted anyone else except me, so I bought them… and two dresses, a blouse and a handbag. The boots inspired. My second favourite item is a green velvet high waisted skirt that my mother gave to me. The skirt is sensational and we are married, not having an affair – married… for life.

How do your clothes and your style connect to your lifestyle?
This is a painfully corny answer, but the clothes that I wear and my style is my lifestyle, in that I don’t really care where I’m going and how everyone else is going to be dressed, I still dress the way I dress. I can be at a music festival out on a farm somewhere and you will still see the same me, maybe with Wellingtons on… just kidding.

What would you love to add to your wardrobe if you could anything?
I would love to find a great pair of jeans. I own one pair of jeans that were given to me and I never wear them. I often see other women wearing jeans in a way I have never seen and I wish I could be a denim jeans kind of girl.

If the house was on fire, which three things in the wardrobe would you grab first?
The cream white patent python heels that remind of Elvira (if I haven’t thrown these damaged shoes away already, I can’t let a fire damage them), the velvet green high waisted skirt because it is a work of art that must be preserved and the handbag I have on my shoulder (either way I will love it), unless it is the black studded one I bought from Meltz, because that was a super trend purchase, which means then I’d like to include my witchy boots.

there’s just no need for…calf hugging boots that end mid calf

There is something about a pair of calf hugging boots that end mid calf that screams: “these boots are cheap – we were skimping on the leather which is why we didn’t go all the way to the knee.” My best friend Nomi actually pointed this out to me and I concur with this notion because as you know from my feelings about the kitten heel, I do not have much affection for anything “in the middle.”
Just so we are on the same page: I am talking about the calf-hugging boot with a zip, the one that has the potential to give your calf a “muffin top.” You know the one. You’ve seen it before.

lovely snippets from the guillotine winter returns 2011 catalogue

Totally in love with the Guillotine Winter Returns 2011 Catalogue.
Thithi would like the panelled leggings, the asymmetrical jacket and you know what...the trapeze ruffle neck with belt (so on trend with the print) and the pleated pocket dress won't hurt either.

lindiwe suttle x woolworths beauty

In keeping with the winter theme Come Together, Woolies have collaborated with the beautiful Lindiwe Suttle to be the new ‘face’ of Winter Beauty at Woolworths and I was lucky enough to ask the lovely, talented and devastatingly fashionable singer some questions. I have only posted some of them here, so catch the rest of them on my Style Scoop blog, where I’ll also list some of the specials at the Woolworths Beauty Festival.

Home to top international brands like Benefit, Lancôme and Sisley, I’m literally going to be swiping my Woolworths card like a crazy person from now until the 1st of May. There’s special offers and gifts with purchases from virtually all of the awesome brands, as well as the opportunity to save R100 on any beauty product purchases of R500 and over, so in all honesty you can’t really be blamed for maxing out your Woolworths card.

And now… I present Lindiwe Suttle

How would you describe your style?
Unique and fearless.

What is there too much of in your wardrobe?
Shoes, shoes, and more shoes, I have always wanted to design a shoe line, so I use to collect vintage shoes for inspiration even if they were not in my size. I am obsessed with shoes.

Who are your favourite designers?
Established designers –Kluk CGDT, Clive Rundle, Suzaan Heyns, Missibaba, David Tlale. Up-and-coming – Kutloano Molokomme, Lara Klawikowski, brand called Skeet---. They have been amazing designers, they all have a talented future ahead of them. They have created memorable on-stage looks for me.

Tell us a secret - where do you shop that no one else knows about?
Country Road for day-to-day wear, I do not think people expect me to shop there because they think my outfits are over-the-top. I think Woolworths was so smart to bring that brand in their stores, it is classic yet edgy.

Do you plan your outfits or throw on whatever is on hand?
Everything I wear is planned out, even my gym clothing.

What's your sartorial guilty pleasure?
Ida Elsje and Philippa Green’s Olive Green Cat shop. I go in there every week to see what is new, they are so creative it just gives me inspiration to be around them creating new stuff. I love that their workroom is in the shop, it makes the customers feel closely related to with what they will buy.

Whose wardrobe would you love to steal?
Chloë Sevigny, all of her vintage clothing especially.

What’s the last beauty product you bought?

I am one of the Woolworths beauty face this season and I never knew they had so much to offer until I received a goodie bag of products. Their colors are for everyone. I love their long lasting lipsticks, Espresso is my new favorite.

Do you drink 8 glasses of water a day?

No but I should, it’s the best way to keep your skin healthy, it is better than any expensive beauty product.

What websites to you visit the most?

Youtube, Facebook and Twitter are what I am on constantly checking and sending updates. I love staying in touch with fans that I cannot get to. I feel humbled when I get a request for advice or just a kind message on FB from someone I do not even know. These social media sites have truly changed the way we interact with our fans and friends.

What are you favourite cities?

Berlin, Buenos Aires and Cape Town.

What makes you happy?

Unity, love, children, family, music and fashion.

more shoes...

So, it’s no secret that I love shoes… which is why I am very excited that we now have a ‘local hybrid’ high fashion South African footwear brand. Okay, wait a minute Thithi… WTF is ‘local hybrid’? Well folks I just made it up, or maybe I didn’t to describe brands or labels that are conceptualized, marketed and branded in South Africa, but are produced outside of our shores.

LiliKoi is one of those…Created by Aimee Sarkin-Rosa, the shoes are manufactured in top-quality leather factories around Brazil & Europe and are all about functional footwear of the highest quality. Inspired by the type of woman you see in SABC 3’s Cashmere Mafia the range includes a wide range of styles including heels, boots, sandals and pumps - like the animal print ones below, which I have strangely fallen in love with. I say strangely because I don't do animal print, in fact I don't think I own anything animal print, but I can see myself doing something sick with these pumps.

Lilikoi’s prices range from R1200-R3000. The line will be available at select boutiques nationwide.
For stocktist information please call Aimee on 082 780 3221.

so much beauty

The store opening was great. The store is so lovely - there are no major words to describe it. I tried to share my love for the store on Style Scoop. So check out my post on the opening, which will only be up on MONDAY... so enjoy your weekend. Drink, eat, do whatever. Then get to the office and check it out.
Love and Cinnabons
xx

I am obsessed with these gold skulls. Obsessed. And can we take a moment to talk about the leather swing tags. Seriously, I am beyond impressed by the attention to detail and just beauty in every little corner of that store.

fashion week duh-rama

I really can’t help but comment on the current spat between Abigail Betz and Milisuthando Bongela. If you have no idea what I am on about – take a look at Mili’s blog post on her thoughts on SAFW, look at Abigail’s Twitter timeline and then read Betz’s official response to Mili’s post.

It is a pity that the cattiness of the entire exchange and that of Paledi and Betz on Twitter, has taken away from valid and disturbing points that all parties raise. Not to go into it too much, but Mili makes a somewhat valid point (maybe her choice of words weren’t appropriate) about the behaviour of a designer like Abigail Betz who is looked up to by many aspiring designers has a responsibility to the industry to add value to discussions regarding fashion in South Africa and to chose her words carefully.

This is totally my opinion, but when you are in that kind of influential position, you really do have a responsibility to respect the industry – so talking ill of the fashion week where you first showcased your work is not appropriate. I’m all for freedom of speech, but in an industry that is working towards becoming a valued part of the economy, support and respect to those trying to further the industry is important. Criticise constructively, but use tact. Have we not learnt from the Kuli Roberts saga?
In the same breath Ms Betz made some very valid points on model choices, and on unfinished collections. I myself saw pins on the runway, unfinished hemlines etc and really that should not happen under any circumstances.

Perhaps to me the thing that got me thinking the most was when Ms Betz compared the fashion weeks and AFI won hands down in her opinion. The thing is, if we were to write down a list of all the faults at both fashion weeks they would probably come out around the same. This is why we need to have one fashion week. How glorious would it be if SAFW and AFI brought their resources together to produce a week of carefully curated collections?
By default the designers showing would be the best, because there would be a limited number of spots and the production of everything would be slicker. Media and VIP rooms would be filled with the relevant people and the impact of one “must-see” “must be there” fashion week will be felt.

Anyways, that’s my 5-cent into the conversation...

suzaan heyns store opening

I am very excited I can barely contain myself... Suzaan Heyns is opening a store people and the opening is on Thursday evening. Super excited to see how this exceptionally talented designer has translated her unique and beautifully avant-garde aesthetic into a retail space. Suzaan's home is very pretty and totally Selby worthy, so I can only imagine what her store is going to look like. Excited.

black coffee safw summer collections 2011

Last night was hectic... I felt totally frantic but awesome at the same time as I rushed between Fashion Fridays at Twenty Two and SAFW's opening night.

Running towards the Shine Studios in my heels, I couldn't help but totally fall in love with this city all over again, as I gazed over at the Nelson Mandela bridge, the beautiful Shine Studios building and watched as it's cool as ever people entered the building. I even fell in love with my car guard James and parted with more than just silver coins when I left.

I know this is going to sound corny, but probably not as corny as what I just wrote above, but SAFW at the Shine Studios felt very much like what I would imagine a fashion week to feel like. Nestled in a gorgeous spot in Braamfontein, the Shine Studios literally showcases the beautiful views of Johannesburg and it is a totally amazing venue to host what I consider to be the only real fashion week in South Africa... there I said it.

So, because I couldn't split myself in two, I only managed to see Black Coffee's show last night. Immediately after the show several people asked me what I thought of it, and I am not going to go into an intense thesis on what I thought it was all about, but I will say that I find Jacques van der Watt exceptionally talented.
My affinity towards their collection really comes from the fact that I am a bit of a design geek who when studying design and history of art always identified with the "notion of form follows function." I loved the work of Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and the like and I wished I got to study at the Bauhaus. Add the concept of modular building systems and you have me on your team forever.

The description on the back of the leaflet said the following:

Black Coffee presents Form-Function-Furniture

Black Coffee has developed a new modular system of interlocking laser-cut garment components. These innovative basic building blocks can be reconfigured to fulfill multiple functions within the life of a user.

fashion fridays: menswear edition

Following the success of the launch of the monthly ‘Fashion Fridays’ last month Twenty Two is planning another wonderful evening of music, drinks, food and most importantly local South African designer fashion for another fun-filled night shopping experience.
Guest fashion designers from across the country are invited to exhibit at Twenty Two as part of a night shopping experience all in the name of supporting, loving and buying local fashion. This time they are doing something for the boys and have invited some of the most exciting local menswear brands and designers to exhibit such as Simon Deporres, Babatunde, Adriaan Kuiters, Sylvester Fallata as well as a whole range of t-shirts from Bam Bam such as Mingo Lamberti, 2Bop and Marchand.
Fashion Fridays usually takes place once a month on the first Friday of the month but this month Twenty Two have decided to have it on the Friday 8th April in line with the start of SA Fashion week which will also be taking place in Braamfontein at the Shine Studios just a few streets away.
This event is open to everyone who loves and is keen to support local fashion – just don’t forget to wear at least one locally produced or manufactured item.
