A couple of weeks ago, I met with Craig Jacobs, Shashi Naidoo and social photographer Oupa ‘Oupaparazzi’ Bopape, to shoot images on the Queen Elizabeth Bridge near the Bree Street Taxi rank for Fundudzi by Craig Jacobs summer #protest campaign.
When Craig asked me to participate in this campaign alongside bloggers Jerri Mokgofe and Malibongwe Tyilo, I was really nervous because well... I am not a photographer, but I said ‘yes’immediately because I wanted to be part of something relevant and use my little digital platform to raise awareness.
Inspired by protest movements from the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street and Pussy Riot, the campaign called upon 3 bloggers to interpret the #protest theme in my own style by photographing three of the country’s most magnetic personalities - Edith Venter, Khanyi Mbau and Shashi Naidoo wearing emotive slogan tees designed by artist Unathi Mkonto.
The arrival of the campaign comes as #protest lands in independent boutiques across the country, as well as the Edgars X SA Fashion Week Capsule at Edgars stores in Melrose Arch and Sandton City.
