air reinvented… my favourite sneaker reinvented

A couple of years ago, I got myself an unofficial invitation to the Cape/Burg launch at Nike’s Gallery on 4th in Melville, Johannesburg… How amazing was that space?! I literally showed up looking semi cute and waited for someone to let me be part of one of the coolest intimate Nike events I have been to, since Gallery on 4th’s opening event. I am glad I gate crashed that event for two reasons: the first being that I would never have gotten the opportunity to be the PR Manager at Styling Concepts on NSW account and the second reason being that I would never have had the chance to fall in love with a shoe I loved for pure aesthetics again and for a multitude of other reasons.
I would never describe myself as a sneaker head, I love sneakers but I would never try to act like I know a great amount about sneakers. So, I can honestly say that prior to the Cape/Burg launch I really didn’t know much about the Nike Air Max family from a technology and innovation point of view. I knew the basics… Air, Tinker Hatfield and that I liked the silhouette of the Air Max 1. I knew that I liked the colourways and that I liked that I could see my ankles. I knew that the amazing Phoebe Philo wears Air Max 1’s because they are so relevant to a fashion wardrobe.
That’s what I knew.

Fast forward to 2013, where Tinker Hatfield’s Nike Air Max 1 (87) – and its brothers (and sisters) the Nike Air Max 90, 95, and 97 have been reinvented with the technologies of today. This cultural icon has been updated with a highly adaptable-engineered mesh upper, which not only increases breathability but also… get this, makes the shoe lighter and some how this has all been done without losing the iconic look of the Nike Air Max 1, 90, 95, and 97. Cool huh?
