08 Aug 27 Boxes
27 Boxes in Melville Johannesburg is an unconventional shopping centre built entirely of shipping containers. Inspired by Boxpark in London and one of my favourite buildings in the world the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the building made me think of Ayn Rand’s character Howard Roark in The Fountainhead because of how form follows function. The practical use of space seamlessly combines the outdoors with the indoors as garden plants and lawns surround the containers and brick built elements of the mall. Natural light fills the mall which is something that makes for a really interesting and unique shopping experience as the majority of malls in Johannesburg surround visitors with artificial lighting.
The mix of artisanal retailers ranging from coffee roasteries, deli’s with cronuts, juice bars, fashion designers, art studios, galleries and interior decor stores is the best part about 27 Boxes. As the new home of my favourite designers Black Coffee, I was pleased to discover other wonderful stores like Somerset Jane, Woodiz and Rae Interiors – my favourite discovery due to the affordable modern and graphic interior decor trinkets in store.
