16 Aug Skip Fashion Exchange 2015
Last week Thursday, my sister Lumka (pictured above) and I attended the Skip Fashion Exchange at Shine Studios in Braamfontein Johannesburg. Hosted by the lovely Pabi Moloi, this years swap to shop event was amplified with the inclusion of a runway show where the three designers hand picked by Skip finally showcased their My Fabulous collections. Inspired by their respective cities and Instagram posts submitted by members of the public, Sibu Msimang (Durban), Jenevieve Lyons (Cape Town) and Rich Mnisi (Johannesburg) each showed a 10 look collection on Thursday night and I am pretty sure that even if their names weren’t put up people would have been able to tell which collection belonged to Durban, Johannesburg or Cape Town.
Inspired by Johannesburg, Rich Mnisi’s graphic, denim heavy collection played around with contrasts. Contrasts in shape and proportion as well as fabrics reflected the contrasts of the city of Johannesburg, with all its complexities and layers. The heavy use of denim, with all its connections to streetwear, embodied the urban, street aspects of the city and the graphic blue and white added a sophisticated clean and modern touch to the entire collection.
Jenevieve Lyons collection was an all white collection that was inspired by the white misty cold of Cape Town that featured sheer an solid pieces layered over each other gently for a collection that felt reminded me of the white mist on Table Mountain. Sibu Msimang’s Durban collection was filled with colour and print and the relaxed energy of the collection reminded of the Durban Waterfront during July holidays – filled with people, warm weather and relaxed styling.
