21 Dec Maaji at The Secret Room
Pool parties, beaches, sundowners and brightly coloured swimwear… Those are just some of the things I love about summer time. Even though I don’t really believe in a “uniform” when it comes to fashion and specifically style, I will very happily admit that my goal to wardrobe cleanse over the past three years has resulted in a wardrobe made up mostly of black, white, grey, army green and denim. However, when it comes specifically to swimwear, I never intentionally go for a black or white bather, because for me, summer is all about colour and clashing prints. In fact, the brighter and more colourful, the better, which is why I am such a fan of Maaji swimwear.
Created by sisters Manuela and Amalia Sierra, this Columbian brand is all about the unexpected juxtaposition of prints, colour and versatility. Most Maaji swimwear is reversible, which means you get added value with regards to your purchase and you can buy most Maaji pieces as separates and pair them with each other as you choose, which means you can be creative and fun with your poolside look. In addition to the general amazingness that is Maaji swimwear, each swimsuit comes in a re-usable, eco-friendly bag, which is perfect for when you are done swimming and need somewhere to pop your wet bathing suit in.
This Maaji Aerie Bearberry bikini from The Secret Room is one of my favourite swimwear investments because of how versatile the top is. It’s slightly longer cut means that it can be paired with other clothing items, like the pair of denim cut offs I am wearing at The Other Girls Pool Party below. However, for a more appropriate “public facing” look, I would suggest pairing the top with a high waisted skirt or palazzo pants. High waisted – because it is my opinion that one can should only expose a maximum of five fingers of midriff in environments that don’t have a pool or a body of water…
Shopping at The Secret Room in Riverside Centre, Bryanston was such a pleasure because of how the owner of the store owner Emma Haford and her staff really make sure that you walk out with something you are in love with. In fact I witnessed Emma stop a customer from buying something that she was ambivalent about. Something you don’t normally see in a store because it’s always about selling, selling…
Emma is really passionate about clothing that makes one happy and this is something you can see when you walk into the store of brightly colored clothing and swimwear.
We all know how stressful shopping for a bikini can be, so I really appreciated how comfortable shopping at The Secret Room was. Asking for a size up, feeling like your butt was too big, and all those things you go through when shopping for a bikini didn’t feel awkward because the ladies who work in the store and Emma made you feel like you are shopping with your girlfriends. They were honest, helpful an suggested items you wouldn’t think of for yourself, which is exactly the kind of experience someone needs when shopping for a bikini.
